The subway is probably the easiest/cheapest way to get around NYC, but it's quite confusing... I hate it! I've been to several citites with subways (Chicago, London, Paris, Washington DC...) and I think the NYC subway is by far the most confusing. I'm trying to remember what I got last time I was there... I think I got a pass that was good for like ten rides, and you can get that probably at any subway station - they have touch-screen displays and it takes cash or credit cards (I think...?)
It depends on how much you're gonna use it, really - if you're expecting lots of subway rides, you might be better off buying a two or three-day pass (I'm pretty sure they have those) but if you only take the subway twice a day, it'll probably be cheaper to get a 10-ride ticket or whatever.
I'm sorry if that was confusing. It's past my bedtime.
