AOPHottie - you just have to use your judgement about the black dress. Many wedding traditions have gone by the wayside and lots of brides actually choose to have black bridesmaids dresses for formal black- or white-tie weddings - but, depending on the people and the region of the country, black is still not acceptable at weddings.
Please, whatever you do, don't wear white! It's so tacky when people do that...
And don't wear anything that makes you look like a harlot. It's awful when people show up to such a meaningful event in a trampy outfit. Not that I'm saying you would...
