Barnard College is more that affiliated with Columbia University, its part of it. My understanding is that when Barnard students graduate, they receive Columbia parchment.
Because Barnard is part of Columbia, Barnard students are permitted to go through Columbia's NPC rush. They may also join the co-ed societies at that school. The NPC groups at Columbia are composed of roughly 50% Barnard students. A few years ago, this was looking like a problem because there was a rule that no Columbia student group may contain more than 50% Barnard students. I don't know if, and how this was resolved.
Also, for those sororities with dormant chapters at Barnard, it is, in my opinion, reasonable to consider chartering at Columbia a rechartering of an ancient chapter. This perspective may have great appeal for
AEF and
AOP, because their mother chapters were at Barnard.
