Guess what? You're not alone! I definitely feel you on this one. I started my AI journey in November 2000 (or spring 1997 if you want to count the time when I got a bid as an undergrad) and I'm still trying some three years later!
I agree with you that it would certainly be helpful if someone could at least let you know if you are even in the running! Waiting for that response is probably just so nervewracking! That's as icky as my situation which was people telling me that they were definitely interested in me yet not taking any action for forever and a day.
Let's just say that waiting in general is no fun.
Again, I'm really hoping that you receive an answer very soon!
