There are ways around anything. Even if R. Kelly had a great year in terms of record sales, the NAACP, if the org really wanted to, probably could have done some behind the scene work to just give him a nod but not a nomination. It is, after all the NAACP. It's not just some joe-shmoe org giving the award and I would hope that they realize that the people that they nominate and award receive, to some extent, an endorsement from them.
