It's deeper than that even. They are trying to say that he was involved in drugs to justify the killing. Reading this article, that argument is being highly disputed. If the family was told that the autopsy reports came back negative that means there were NO signs of alcohol or drugs found. But now suddenly the reports are positive? That does lend itself to a strong suspicion of evidence tampering. In any case, he was kneeling on the ground and shot point blank. So as you said it was totally senseless.
