It's more than just a matter of personal protection.

There is no way for a gov't to became a tyrant faster than if you make guns illegal. If a gov't is not afraid of it's citizens, it will do whatever it wants. The founding fathers knew this, that is why they wrote it into the Constitution. Hell, we were the rebels back then and many of the FF thought that a revolution every twenty years or so would be a good thing.

As far as I'm aware assault rifles aren't legal right now...so I don't see that as an issue. Anything that is automatic is illegal, however it is very easy to make a semi into a fully automatic weapon if you know what you are doing.

To carry hand-gun (concealed) you have to take a training course. Most people that shoot guns have learned from their parents or have gained an interest from somewhere else and taken a course in it. Very rarely will you see someone with no knowledge what so ever just decide they want a gun. I don't see a need for a license.

I am also opposed to a registration of guns. In England they started out with 'just' registering hand guns....next thing you know they decide it's illegal to own a hand gun and it just so happened they had a nifty little registration list of everyone that owned one. The gov't does not need to know who has guns, what kind, or how many.

Like it was said above. Laws are not going to stop those that want to use guns for unlawful purposes. It may stop a few accidents, but it will be far more damaging to our liberties in the future.
