I think she picked Gil because not only was he better looking (in some opinions) but because he was "reserved"....I think she wanted a challenge ("I'll get him to open up...") or wanted to work for his attention and affection. On Brian's hometown date she said that she wanted Brian to step up and reveal more about his true feelings....he did that, but I guess then all the mystery and challenge were gone, so she had to pick the one she hadn't "cracked" yet......CRAZINESS!!!
And it's obvious Gil wasn't into Larissa....just in it for the face time and for possibly the "challenge" of winning. She gave him a perfect excuse for getting out....if it hadn't been the Fabio thing (what's the big deal in that? I bet if everyone knew she was Fabio's ex at the beginning of the show, Gil would be bragging "heeeyyyyyy....I landed Fabio's ex! I'm badass!), it would have been something else. He was looking for an excuse to make a memorable exit.
Husband thinks the whole thing was scripted and the producers told Gil to leave her when she told the Fabio secret.....
