You can teach yourself somewhat, with a good book AND a video - but I'd recommend taking some sort of class, or find a tutor. Although ASL is somewhat based on English, the grammar is quite different, and can be confusing.
I've learned a blend of ASL/SEE (Signed Exact English) sign language from my wife - "true" ASL as taught in school isn't necessarily what "deaf" people use to communicate - there are blends of the different sign languages available.
