I see what your are saying to some degree, but the type of thing you mentioned is not really what I would consider hazing, more tradition and fun... (it wasn't meant to severely hurt or injure) I highly doubt that the early days of fraternities involved a lot of bows-and-tows and drinking until you puke. Anyway, to answer your question, I think fraternities survived their hazing years because of insecurity.
