ariesrising has said many things that I feel about "cover" songs. It's like-Don't you have the imagination and creativity to think of something new? Plus, the new version SHOULD take the listener to a DIFFERENT place, not replicate what the original had us thinking or feeling. Unless the singer can (as Simon says) make it their own, they ought leave it alone, because it will NEVER measure up to the original.
The examples of Respect and I Will Always Love You are excellent examples of singers making it their own. Muskrat love was a song the Captain and Tenille (YUCK) made popular-they even performed it for the Queen. It was written and performed by Willis Allen Ramsey. The original, though few have heard it, FAR surpasses the cover. Still C&T made it their own and it sold like hot cakes.
