Ahem... minor correction - the Japanese invaded the Aleutian Islands in 1942 - the only piece of the North American continent taken by the Japanese. Not to forget the German U-boat sinkings of merchant ships within sight of the U.S. mainland. The Japanese flew unmanned firebomb balloons that were supposed to land within the continental United States and burn the forests of the Pacific Northwest; only a few did accomplish their mission.
Technically, while Alaska, Hawaii and the Philippines were territories of the United States, they were very much U.S. soil at the time. Granted, there were no battles that took place in the Continental U.S.
