I'm not surprised at all, actually. Tom's an older guy, and he's probably already lost people in his family (grandparents, I'm sure, and likely parents/in-laws or cousins or other relatives). He's also going into the game not expecting anything bad to happen. Because of that, it's easy for him to say "I've made this particular committment, and I will see it through."
Not knowing what stage Jenna's mother was at when Jenna had to decide to go back, I can't really judge her. If things were looking up and Jenna was torn and her mother told her it was okay to leave and to follow her dream of challenging herself in the game, then that's between the two of them. I think we can all say that we have made mistakes in life, or done things we want to change. Jenna was able to go home when she felt she wanted to and needed to, and that's what truly matters.
