"Concerned,"
I suppose you should just thank your lucky stars that you weren't initiated into a sorority in this part of the country. I don't know any sorority on my campus that didn't have standing rules for sisters--to make suggestions about what was and was not appropriate dress, behavior, etc. for certain situations. It wasn't like we stood over our pledges with a switch and threatened to beat them down if they wore white shoes after Labor Day (heaven forbid!), but more like gentle guidelines of what the campus norms are and how we wanted our chapter to be represented.
Note to the GC regulars: I do not intend to spark yet another "North vs. South" debate with this post! Please let's not beat that dead horse yet again.
