Maybe don't give it to him on V-Day. If it's a purely plutonic gesture and you're afraid he might get the wrong idea (because let's face it, boys aren't the smartest creatures on the planet). Give it him a couple days after. And just say, hey I bought you this gift just to say thanks for letting me move in here for the time being.
As for gift ideas. What's he into. Is there a CD he wants, maybe a dvd, maybe a gift certificate to some place?
