This happened to me when my mom did my highlights about 2 years ago and I looked like trailer trash. I went to a salon right away and told them what happened and had them fix it.
I was highlighting for a while, and I've been back at my natural color for about a year, but I still color it a lot because I'm ALREADY getting grays in the front. No one really notices unless I point them out, but they drive me batty.
Maybe I'll look around and see if there are any places in the area that do highlights on the cheap. I think the cheapest I've gotten them done was for $75, but that was in my hometown which is about an hour away from where I live now. I think even the Hair Cutteries around here charge $65. Maybe I'll just see if this color calms down a little bit.
