^^ I've ALWAYS won auctions this way.

With highly coveted items (like sorority pins for example) there are some ebay members who simply bid to raise the price.

Say for example I placed a proxy bid and my max was $100, but the bid so far was only 45, people have been known to bid on the item simply to raise the cost.. so I would definitely suggest waiting until the end, unless money is really not a concern and you just really really want to be the highest bidder for 8 days straight on that one item
