I don't know that it's that much more acceptable for men to be fat either nowadays. Most guys that I know are a lot more body conscious, as are the ladies.

I don't mind a guy who is on the skinny side, but wouldn't want someone who was...plump. Most of my female friends say the same- we're not asking a man to look like The Rock, but be in shape.

Besides, this whole conversation is moot, considering that the majority of adult Americans are fat. More often than not it's fat guy/fat girl nowadays.
