Re: College Dorms. . .A Few Questions

I will answer by school since I was a dorm dweller @ Kent State (a PWI) and Central State (an HBCU)

1. Did your school(s) have single sex dorms? co-ed? combo?

Kent State: All of the above: Single sex, co-ed by floor and co-ed by wing. There were 30 dorms divided up in 7 campus "districts" Six of them were strictly for upperclassmen and the over 21 crowd and all those were co-ed, one of which was an all-single room dorm.

Central State: single sex only.

2. Did you all have a visitation policy? What was it?

Don't know, never had an issue with it. All I remember was that at Central State, for our dorm (all male upperclassmen), all female students and visitors had to sign in and out of the dorm. Male students and visitors, parents of either sex, and children were exempt from this rule.

3. Did you live in SS or Co-ed dorms? Why (if you had a choice)?

Kent State: originally a co-ed dorm (Humphrey Hall), but I hated the distance from my classes, the window view and my roommate, so I transferred to Clark Hall (all-male). I wanted to live in Manchester Hall (co-ed by floor), but I had a good roommate, so I stayed at Clark.

Central State: SS 'cause the CSU administration said so.

4. Did you sneak folks in and out?

Both schools: No; didn't have to, didn't need to, didn't have a reason to.

5. Did you have roommates? Do you still keep in touch with them?

Kent State: Robert Brown (No, but I would've liked to).
Note: My original roommate was a white guy named Ray Fatur, and I couldn't stand him or his friends; they were too busy trying to be smart-a[leck]s whenever they were in my room. And he would jump on you in a minute if you touched his Pittsburgh Steelers blanket (if you leaned against the bunk bed, Ray would say, "Watch it! Steeler blanket!" Goodness, what a moron.

Central State: Darrell Elting (No)

Reminisce about dorm life. Funny moments? Outrageous moments?

Kent State: Rob was normally a rather quiet, reserved black guy, but get him around someone like me and we would be chattin' about everything that was anything. Some of the debates and discussions we had bordered on the silly and inane, but I had a great time being his roommate.

Central State: I spoke w/Darrell very little. All I knew was that he always left my TV on at full blast and wouldn't be in the room to watch it.

Notable fact: I met Rob's younger sister Angela @ CSU when she was a freshman. Her boyfriend was a friend of Darrell's. She later became Miss CSU 1998 and Rob's youngest sister became Miss CSU 2000.

ETA: Oh, I remember one outrageous moment @ CSU. I was roused out of a sound sleep at 12 midnight by the hall director b/c it was my turn to police to outside dorm area (so he said..normally that is punishment for someone who broke visitation rules). Anyhow, we were picking up litter and trash, etc. when I found at least 5 used condoms littering the lawn. Luckily the RD said not to touch those..like I was gonna anyway. But it seemed that the back lawn always had used condoms in the grass. Ick.
