If the author is 27 (as posted above), this was more than two years ago.
The article says that one of the friends of the author (the author had depledged, even tho his brother was a member) feared the approaching hell week. Prior to hell week (or maybe after it), the friend was blackballed (voted out) and never initiated. The friend died the next day, probably a heart attack.
The article is confusing, merging some details of the author being kidnapped and robbed after he left a party (maybe a fraternity party, before he was a freshman) and his short life as an unhappy pledge.
