I highly suggest purchasing some travel books from the 'Let's Go" series. They are written for young people and have lots of advice and suggestions on CHEAP things. I would have never though to eat at the USDA cafeteria in Washington D.C. without it. There is also a whole section on bar and night life.
I had a friend who took the Greyhound to Alaska... for a weekend...

Thanks for the book suggestion - there are so many travel books that it's hard to tell which ones to buy...
