EMINEM'S EX-WIFE WARNED DURING SENTENCING
Eminem's ex-wife Kimberly Mathers was officially sentenced on Wednesday, January 21st, in a Detroit courtroom after reaching a plea agreement with prosecutors in December. Mathers was sentenced to two years probation and if she successfully completes the term, the conviction could be sealed or expunged from her records, according to Michigan's WXYZ Action News. Mathers will also be subject to random drug testing.
Mathers pleaded guilty to possessing less than 25 grams of cocaine and failing to give adequate space to an emergency vehicle. In exchange, charges of driving with a suspended license and maintaining a drug house stemming from a separate case will be dropped. Per her plea agreement, Mathers will be able to keep her driver's license.
During sentencing Judge Edward Servitto told Mathers, "If you screw that up, however, it is automatic that you go to jail. Do you understand that?" Mathers responded, "I understand that your honor."
Mathers' drug possession charges stem from a June traffic stop on Interstate-94 in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. During the stop for allegedly failing to merge with other cars before a construction barricade, police found a white powder in Mathers' Cadillac Escalade, which was later confirmed to be cocaine. Mathers was charged with felony cocaine possession, driving with a suspended license, and unsafe driving near a stopped emergency vehicle.
Mathers was later charged with running a drug house after a September 29th, 2003, arrest when authorities responding to a noise complaint at a Candlewood Suites hotel in Warren, Michigan, allegedly found drugs at a party in Mathers' hotel room.
Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers III, married Kim in June of 1999, and they have a daughter named Hailie Jade. The couple divorced in 2001.
BEN AND J.LO CALL IT A DAY
Yes, it's true -- Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez are no longer a couple. They're no longer engaged, nor married, nor sneaking around pretending that they're engaged or married. The pair -- whose miles of gossip-column coverage in the last year could have saved a rainforest -- have ended their romance. According to a statement from Lopez's publicist, the singer made the decision to end the relationship, though the reason was not disclosed: quote, "At this difficult time, we ask that you respect her privacy."
"Respecting privacy" is a tall order for a relationship that often seemed to be more public than private. As their romance bloomed, so did the media hype surrounding it. Lopez and Affleck were trailed by reporters constantly, even after the couple attempted to withdraw by purchasing a massive estate on a small island in Georgia this past summer. They were due to marry in early fall, but called it off in the eleventh hour, quote, "due to the excessive media attention surrounding our wedding."
Lopez has recently been spotted with her former flame, Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, though both parties have denied a reunion.
KOBE BRYANT DUE BACK IN COURT TODAY
NBA star Kobe Bryant is due back in Eagle County, Colorado, courtroom today (January 23rd) for another pretrial hearing in his sexual assault case. Most of the proceeding will be closed to the press. Earlier this week, the judge in the case said he'd hear arguments over whether the accuser's medical history should be allowed as evidence at trial.
Bryant's attorneys are expected to present evidence and call witnesses, including the woman's mother and former boyfriend, in an effort to prove she has given up certain privacy rights because she talked about her medical condition with others.
The open portions of the hearing are expected to include a report from prosecutors about who in the district attorney's office ordered or received T-shirts mocking Bryant as a, quote, "cheater." Also, the defense will seek more access to DNA tests on evidence in the case, a move opposed by prosecutors.
The married, 25-year-old Bryant is accused of raping a 19-year-old woman on June 30th while visiting a hotel in Edwards, Colorado. He claims the sex was consensual. If convicted, Bryant faces four years to life in prison, or 20 years to life on probation.
KEYSHAWN JOHNSON ROBBED AT GUNPOINT
No arrests had been made Thursday (January 22nd) in the armed robbery of NFL player Keyshawn Johnson. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers player was robbed of money and jewels when he was held up gunpoint in Berkeley, California, on Wednesday (January 21st). Luckily, Johnson wasn't injured during the robbery.
Police said Johnson was approached by two robbers as he was talking on his cell phone after walking out of a barber shop. Lt. Eric Gustafson told the AP, "Johnson gave up his money and jewelry and the suspects fled."
The 31-year-old Johnson, a two-time Pro Bowl receiver, was deactivated for the final six games of last season. The Buccaneers reportedly plan to either trade or release him.
In 1996, Johnson was the first pick in the 1996 draft by the New York Jets, who traded him to Tampa Bay three years ago for two Number One draft choices
