When I worked at the Clinique counter at Macys, for instance, we could accept back any Clinique product, even if it wasn't purchased at Macy's. And even if it didn't have the packaging, but I strongly recommend hanging on to the original packaging, any sort of store sticker/label designating where it was purchased (I know Macy's and Nordstrom's put CRL stickers on to prove it's from their store), and the receipt. This being said, please don't show up and try to return something that is obviously well used and you just want to exchange it for a full one. It is tacky and bad karma. Not that I think anyone here would do that of course, but it's a situation I have encountered! But seriously, makeup companies know that once you get it home it often isn't the same for you, so don't feel like you're stuck with that eyeliner forever! Also a good idea to ask when you buy it.

Thanks for your post! Maybe I'll try to exchange the foundation I bought for the eyeliner I'm always stocking up on from Clinique... I just wasn't sure if I should do it with Macy's because it has a barcode on the box, but when I was buying makeup there I told the woman and she was like you should try to bring it back, eh, maybe I'll just keep it for the summer, hopefully it should match my skin tone when I'm tan.
