It does probably have to do with being legal as well as the focus (the party atmosphere of college vs. drinks with dinner). Also, most alums put away their T-shirts and letters after college, so the likelihood they would be wearing them while going out for drinks is slim.

I think the whole issue is to not do anything to besmirch your GLO's name while advertising your affiliation. People love to remember the sordid things about others: They have a hard time remembering that you made the President's List for eight semesters but they can't wait to tell everyone that they saw you puking on the sidewalk after a party . . . and she's an XYZ.

I also remember that if a sister wanted to smoke, she must be sitting, never standing.
