...and yes it is a great store but I only shop there when I can get an employee discount (a friend works there) or at their yearly fall sale. It is generally way too expensive even for me. Oh and by the way, they still sell Seven jeans there...I actually bought my last pair there ironically.
Don't know where you got your information but we here in L.A. must have fell off of the fashion train because Sevens are still very popular in the college/mid-twenties crowd here. I see them in every bar or club party from Sunset to Newport Beach. Now, if you are saying that they are out because they are becoming slightly more mainstream (they sell them at Nordstroms now), then that is a whole other situation. But quite honestly, I coulod care less if it is a "Fashion Go or a Fashion No" because they are super comfortable.
ETA: By the way, Powell is our library...and I promise you we are not having couture fashion shows while studying for a Physics midterm or while writing a History paper. No one is dressed to impress in there,
even at a school like UCLA
