Wow. How did we get off on derogatory terms and of all things, Oklahoma?
I'm curious-does someone really cite the existence of a special edition Ford F-150 as a reason to be a Proud Texan? I'm shocked...but then, I come from Chevy truck people....
I don't think being called a Texican is an insult, and I'd venture to guess many Texans might react with confusion, rather than anger at being called the same...its not a common term.
I think you've done what you could to educate the ignorant Texas masses about the derogatory nature of the term "Okie." I, for one, have never, ever heard that it was anything other than a name used to identify Oklahomans...but I haven't read "The Grapes of Wrath." Now that I know it is the handbook to understanding all things Oklahoma, I will definitely put it on my list of things to read. You know, sometimes the meanings of terms change over time...often for the better when people forget the original significance. You said yourself, many from your state are not even aware of the original meaning. For instance, I remember, once I called my dad a dork. I thought he was going to kill me. Turns out, "dork" meant something entirely different in his day...once we figured out the misunderstanding, we laughed & moved on (and now I call him a geek). From now on, if I have the urge to refer to someone from the other side of the Red River, it will be "Oklahoman" and not "Okie." Point taken.
One thing you said really did bother me though:
Quote:
it's the self righteous war mongering conservatives that ARE uneducated from Texas that bother me.

Are you saying there is no equivalent in your state? Seriously? I am shocked and amazed to learn that Oklahoma is not a conservative state, and that there are no "war mongers" within its borders. Why not just leave Texas out of the statement? Who does like war mongers? Oh, and not all conservatives are war mongers....
Oh well...you know, I'm totally proud to be a native Texan. I love the history--factual and legend. Like it or not, the state has a mystique...it can get absurd, but I love it just the same, and would rather lose a limb than move anywhere else. As others have said, I'm sorry you don't have a home that you love. That is a shame.
So, I think now would be a great time to get back to our original discussion...that being "I Like Texas...."?
p.s. If you don't like Texas, go start your "I Like Oklahoma" thread...there may actually be one out there already....
