Yes, but he _WAS_ an Okie, he moved to California. And he didn't really understand what it meant, he never read the Grapes of Wrath. Read the book and then you will understand why I take such great offense to the term. Look at how the Joad family reacts to being called Okies...
And btw, he wasn't from Muskogee, I'm not even sure if Merle Haggard was an Oklahoman. I know that three of his exes were.
And my father, who's Dad was a Marine, when they were stationed in Claifornia when he was a kid, learned first hand that the term Okie is derogatory. As the kids would shout it along with other curse words when starting fights, and this was during the 1950s. People out there still use it as an insult.
So, you can call other people it, but believe me, calling me an Okie is a good way to get punched in the teeth. Besides, Texans were originally called Texicans, denoting that they were once part of Mexico, want me to call you that from now on?
