docdaisy-What a crazy story! I'm glad you found out how great DZ women really are, even if it did start out w/$100 on the line!
I went through recruitment b/c I had met some of the sorority women on campus & liked them...before I moved into the dorm, I never gave going Greek a second thought...I didn't think people like me were "sorority material." I was a geeky Rainbow Girl-not someone who would wear Greek letters & hang out with fraternity boys. In the end, it was kind of a dare I made to myself--I had horrible self esteem in HS, but wanted to turn over a new leaf in college, since only 2 people on that campus knew me before (my future bro-in-law and my roomie)....trying Greek life seemed like the best way to do that.
Before & during recruitment, the the vast majority of the sisters in all groups on my campus seemed like normal people--I was so surprised! Many gorgeous girls who I never would have been friends with in HS b/c I would have been intimidated (I thought I was plain & pudgy too) were as friendly & welcoming as could be. The DZs especially warmed my heart b/c no matter what the subject was throughout recruitment, they found a way to bring it all back to sisterhood-not just parties & having fun.
I remain a loyal DZ b/c it made me who I am today. I am more self-confident, I take pride in myself & my accomplishments and I love my DZ sisters as much as I love my own blood relatives! And the experience is now, even richer b/c I have met so many wonderful sisters through Greekchat & Surfing Sisters! Who knew this was all possible when I pledged (about 15 years ago!!!)??
