Sloan is very common up here, and has been for about five years, played on radio, bars, tv. To classify them I'd compare them to Weezer (one of the more common comparisons), but they describe themselves as "geek rock" or "nerd rock".
However I will have to check-out some of the bands you mentioned.... they may be good but haven't broke out of their region yet.

I wouldn't compare Sloan to Weezer simply because I think they are "darker," which puts them more into the Imperial Teens category for me -- but I suppose they are more like Weezer in the fact that they are less "jammy" than IT and their songs tend to be faster and lyrics tend to be catchier.
It's funny how music can be so different in different countries -- some of the stuff that is huge in Britain and Australia and even Canada never even makes it onto the radio here.
I think Basement Jaxx is starting to blow up even here though; my ex-boyfriend showed me the "Romeo" video last winter and every since then I've heard "Do Your Thing" everywhere -- I think that was the song that was on the Bend It Like Beckham soundtrack, and it's also on the SSX3 soundtrack which I played religiously this fall while avoiding studying for midterms.
Also for dance music I LOVE Madison Avenue's "Don't Call Me Baby" but I heard the rest of their music is not so good so I'm not holding my breath.
