A friend of mine recently got married in October. The situation was somewhat similar. She had a friend whom she asked to be in a wedding, and after a while, she came to realize she didn't want her standing up anymore (she wanted me instead! lucky me!)
Anyway...
Luckily, her friend came to her first about it. She told her that she was having financial issues and could not afford to be in the wedding.
Basically, if I were you, I would tell your friend something like this. If it gets any further, then just very carefully word somethinig to the effect that you feel as though you are growing apart. I hope this helps someway. Good luck, and let us know what happens!
