Boy, I guess I am somewhat responsible for the response, LOL, not so many people here are from central Iowa.
Anyway, if you have a car (well, otherwise, you need to rent one), you can go straight to I-35 where there is a lot of chain hotels (Holiday Inn, AmericInn, etc). Also a piece of advise, there are more hotels in Ankeny (suburb of Des Moines, as you will). Just follow I-235 to the East, then merge to I-35 and then the highway directly pass Ankeny.
I guess the rate is not that expensive, I am talking about $60 here. Try this website,

If you want to drive to Ames (Iowa State University), we have cheap room over our Memorial Union. We're talking about driving 45 minutes here. Or, depends on your GLO, we have lots of Greek Housing here. As far as I know, if your GLO has a house at Iowa State, I see no reason why you can't contact your house and ask whether you can stay over/they can help you out. Remember the Midwest hospitality
