It was primarily for me...I live on the Upper West Side and the trains there (1/2/3/9) are always out of whack on the weekend. The A train should be just fine...worst case scenario, you can take it into the middle of Brooklyn and then take a cab into JFK. I think it all depends on the amount of time you have between flights.
