I think it's the community support.
Although I have a love/hate relationship with community gossip in small towns, I love the way we step up for each other.
There were 2 major accidents around this time last year-- my minister's wife was killed in a tragic car accident (right after her last breast cancer treatment!) and then an Amish family was hit at a high speed in their buggy. The father and several children were killed-- and I don't think the driver had insurance. There were a lot of fundraisers held for the Amish family, and not just by the Amish community. As for my minister's family, there were so many people at the funeral we had to open up the Sunday School building and hook up video equipment so everyone could see it.
