Kappa Sig at Carnegie Mellon Under Investigation

From the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Mid-Day Updates (www.post-gazette.com):

CMU probes fraternity hazing report

Friday, December 05, 2003

Associated Press

Administrators at Carnegie Mellon University are investigating published reports that pledges for a fraternity were forced to drink large amounts of maple syrup and were hit with punching bags this year.

Michael Murphy, dean of student affairs, said administrators were talking to members of the Kappa Sigma fraternity who may have been involved in the alleged hazings in February and October but declined to provide further details.

According to the school's student newspaper, The Tartan, candidates for the fraternity were forced to drink 24 ounces of maple syrup and run a gantlet where they were hit with punching bags. Some students vomited while another suffered a minor concussion, the paper said.

The newspaper also reported pledges were threatened with Dumpster diving, drinking large amounts of milk and cage wrestling.

Adam Welander, head of the fraternity, declined to discuss the alleged hazing but said membership was voluntary and no one was forced to do anything.
