"Our band can beat up your football team!"

The team may need the help this year. It hasn't been much of a season for the Cats. Although they did win Homecoming when I was there!

The first time the Marching 110 (the modern day band) played at Miami for "Migration," I was the announcer.

The Miami fans threw raw eggs and empty wine bottles at the band at pre-game. One guy actually had to be seen by medical people after being hit in the face.

By halftime, the Miami fans were on their feet dancing with the OU Band. We were playing a rock show which included Aquarius and Let the Sunshine from Hair as the finale. It was an overcast day, and when the band got to Let the Sunshine, the clouds parted, and the sun shown through. I kid you not about that, either. When the Miami band came out and played "Mr. Touchdown, USA" (no, I'm not kidding about that), they were booed by their own fans. It was kind of akward for me up in the Miami Press Box.

That was 1968 or '69 when the Bobcats went to the Tangerine Bowl -- the same year that Coach Schembechler, after losing a really hard fought game to O.U. said -- and this is an actual quote -- "they can play football untill Hell freezes over at Ohio and never be champions." He took his sportsmanship to Michigan shortly after that. Both he and Woody Hayes, both legendary, coached at Miami.

Which partially explains my comment about him above. There's no excuse for that at the college level.

There is some question in my mind which came first: Muck Fiami or MucK Fishigan, but the two rivalries remain great ones.

edited to add:

My wife's apartment mate from her senior year at O.U. married a Miami grad, and they live here in Denver. He's a Deke. We have a great time at these alumni gatherings.
