Whew! Where do I begin?
As far as I know, AGD is the only sorority that has ever colonized in Hawai`i. I saw a flyer for a group of girls who were interested in colonizing XYZ sorority and immediately informed my old CA, who was a past president of Panhellenic of Hawaii Alumnae. It's weird because, to our knowledge, XYZ sorority has no alumna representation here. We don't know how that interest was formed.
There are only 4 four-year universities in Hawai`i, but UH-Manoa is the only one with Greek Life. As far as fraternities go, there were 3...count 'em...3 inter/national fraternities on campus -- Beta Theta Pi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and Tau Kappa Epsilon. The Betas and SigEps were already gone when I started college, but as a collegian we hung out a LOT with the TKE brothers. I've spoken to some of the Beta and SigEp alums from UH and there's talk of recolonization in the near future!
I'd love to see another NPC come to campus, but it's hard. Locals are struggling, and while we've never been in trouble numbers wise, our numbers are NOTHING compared to our chapters in the 48. Because we're "isolated", a sorority who wishes to colonize here MUST have a strong alumnae chapter. There's no way colonization can happen without the alums. I'm not really sure how Greek Life is like now that I'm out of school, but I'm assuming that it's been the same as when I was active...steady and it doesn't look like it's going to change for a while.
We rely on our alums A LOT because we don't have chapters, consultants, and VST members nearby. Telephones, fax machines, and EMAILs are our best friends.
When Convention and TLC rolls around, we fundraise like crazy because they're usually held as far away as possible from Hawai`i and it costs an arm and a leg for airfare.
I can go on and on and on about how it's like being Greek here...but I think ya'll would go blind. I'll be sure to post more later!
