At least my fraternity's symbol (we officially do not have a mascot) is the mythical Phoenix that rises from the ashes.

Historically, we have had a Phoenix-like existence. From 1845 to 1864, we were a sophomore class society at Yale, with one chapter (Delta at Marietta College, Ohio) as an all-class society. In 1864, the fraternity was suppressed and took the name Delta Beta Xi, until the Yale faculty eventually shut it down in 1872. From 1872 to 1907, Delta kept the light of the fraternity burning until the members of the Yale Masonic Club revived Alpha Sigma Phi at Yale.
