I always thought it was because of the reasons explained by Rudey and champ.

If I'm watching a movie with a girl, I like having both armrests too. I don't mind sitting next to her, but I'm not trying to be a homophobe by sitting two seats away from her. If the theater's not really packed, then that's what I'll do.
