I don't get why the other pledges couldn't have sat down with Carmen and explained to her that they found some of her comments racially offensive - rather than running to the sisters. It seems that they said something but she laughed it off. The message I'm getting is that the pledges have a lot of internal conflict (which will happen in any group), but that they're incapable of resolving it internally.
It just seems that there are no "intermediate steps" before something big happens. Meena wasn't really prioritizing the sorority and making the effort to get to know everyone, so BAM! she's depledged. Carmen made some thoughtless remarks, so BAM! she's hauled before the sisters and read the riot act.
I don't know how much of this is attributable to MTV's selective editing, of course...
