Polarpi, if this would make your mom feel better about driving (I'm not sure how though) I can give you my cell phone number since I'll already be in California, then if you have a problem you have a sister to call.
I don't know, i understand you mothers concern, but the drive to LA from San Diego is only about a 2 hour drive. Then again, I've driven to Tucson and back over a dozen times and to California and back once.
