In Canada:
Football is NFL and CFL (i.e. the orange ball with the pointy ends)
Soccer is the sport with the white ball with black bits on it.
When World Cup Soccer is on, I call it "football" to be cheeky, since 90% of the rest of the world calls soccer football.
And just to further...since we're talking about the British Empire...
In Australia:
NFL style Football is called "gridiron"
Soccer is Soccer
Rugby is Rugby (more played in New South Wales state [where Sydney is] & New Zealand) and
Football refers to
Aussie Rules Football (more played in the state of Victoria, where Melbourne is). It is kind of like a cross between rugby and basketball and soccer...i.e. can't run with the ball, you have to bounce it or kick it..you can't throw it...weird, I know. It was developed to keep the cricketers in shape during the winter (odd, I know, but 'tis true).
http://afl.com.au/ is where you will see men with nice bodies.

They call it "footy" for short.
