What about those whose dues are $2000+ each semester? That is at least $16,000 over the course of 4 years, and doesn't count incidental expenses (t-shirts, etc).

I think that it is very realistic that some people would pledge a sorority and then realize that they can't spend $16,000 right now because their parents aren't willing to foot the bill or they can't work enough to pay for the sorority plus tuition plus food plus books... It doesn't always mean that they don't love their sisters or that they don't wish they could be an active member! And some sororities don't offer an inactive or early alum status. When I was in college, one of my sisters fathers got very sick, lost his job and then their house was destroyed in a fire. All of this happened within an 18 month period. She was a very active member, but she had to resign because there was just no way she could afford to stay in the chapter. She was lucky to be able to stay in school!
