Alpha Sigma Phi does not confer honorary status upon anyone. Like many fraternities, they allow the initiation of faculty advisors if they are not already members of a social GLO. In rare occasions a single individual may be initiated during the national convention/leadership conference's model ritual; these initiates carry full membership in the fraternity but are not affiliated with any active chapter. They carry the chapter designation of Members-at-Large (M-A-L). M-A-L status is also granted to members of Phi Pi Phi Fraternity (which merged with Alpha Sigma Phi in 1939) whose chapter was inactive at the time of the merger and never rechartered.
The son of the late Ralph Burns (longtime past Grand Secretary) was initiated as an M-A-L in the early 80s - he is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, where there are obviously no social fraternities or sororities.
