much respect...

i want to just say that i agree with jali. Seeing as i also attend school in MN...i also like coral...because in many ways we are the same. after you have been around white people who have NEVER IN THEIR LIVES MET OR INTERACTED WITH PEOPLE OF COLOR....(yes folx...never ever in their lives) and then have them say some crazy ish...yeah you want to slap them silly. and you do get a little annoyed and you don't want to have to "educate" them constantly. it gets boring and tiring.
malik's attempt to educate mike was interesting. malik seemingly has a good heart but sometimes folx like mike (who definitely isn't the brightest bulb in the pack!) need to be told, "look your ignorant ass needs to read a book and quit partying!"

there are two things that i think we are missing when we get angry at coral.
1. when they were at the restaurant (yes these folx mumble entirely too much!) mike said after he was talking about his uncle not hiring black people because they were "slower". he said, "my uncle gave me a pretty good reason for not hiring black people". which meant to me that he agreed. coral should've gotten pissed!
2. mike admits that when teachers talked about black people and events that he just didn't listen. oh so now he wants to listen? okay.

excuse me if i sound angry but on a daily i am here "teaching" white folx that they are not the only ones in this world. so while malik may have had the diplomatic approach...i can feel coral...cause sometimes as much as you want to "teach" you can't be nice and comforting all the time. sometimes you gotta give the ignorant some "tough love".

peace
