most sororities have their chapter meeting once a week, for about an hour. you have to do a little bit of service (my house requires only 4 hrs/semester), but you have tons of opportunities and you can do it at your own convenience. all social functions are optional, though most everyone goes since they're paying for it.
if you had to miss every single chapter meeting because of work, there's not much point in pledging. if you have to miss a few, that's not a huge deal. my sorority allows each sister 2 excused absences from chapter per semester.
just in general, if you have to miss all the functions and meetings, you're not a good member. if every sister did that, what would there be? not much of a sorority. what is the point of working so hard to pay for your dues, if you never have the time to attend even the required functions?
