The system does have its good and its bad. Quota IS only 40.(back in my day it used to be 53...) if houses keep inviting back tons and tons of girls back, some of those girls are being set up for dissapointment in the long run. Say house XYZ is one of the top sororities on campus. If houses invited 75%+ girls back each time they'll end up at prefs with around 200 girls who really really really want to be a part of that house. in a sense, it is unfair to have 200 girls come back for preference parties when there are only 40 slots. So the girls in those houses may be unhappy with the system but they would have had to make those cuts eventually. The girls in houses rank the girls they want the most and those are the ones who they keep for each party and regardless of the system, those are the ones who still would have been the ones to get in in the long run.
one of my good friends in Kappa said that she heard alot of unhappy rushees who got cut from her house & she also agrees with me that its better that they knew early on. She also said while the girl might think she belonged there, if the house cut her, it was for a reason coz each house only really wants the girls who'll belong the most.
Lisa, if any of the houses you wanted earlier has COB, you'll definetely be able to go back. Its hard to show the girls during parties short as Mixers & 2nds what you have to offer. With how crazy formal rush is, it could have also been a system mistake. One of my friends last year ranked a house as her top choice, she was also on thier bid list, but the computer messed up and she got her 2nd choice house which turned out wrong for her and she ended up depledging in the long run and re rushing this year. Also, COBs are usually WAYY laid back and if you have a friend in the house, you'll definetely get royal treatment.
Don't give up coz something good will definetely come from this. Last year, 50% of the sororities didn't make quota (which some of them would rather die than ever admit), plus alot of the bigger houses have girls depledge so then those houses are allowed to COB girls to 'replace' the girls who dropped. Also, alot of the 'popular' houses have high deactivation rates and up to 25% of each pledge class either deactivates or depledges by the following year. (Nice huh? the things you never get told...)
Contact the Office of Greek Life today and find out for sure which houses will be holding informal rush and definetely ask your friends in houses too. not only that, just really think about where you felt the girls were most like you and go from there. if the OGL doesn't know of houses other than the 2 previously mentioned, email the rush chairs or your friends in the houses you did want coz they'll be able to tell you if they are or are not having COB.
