Alpha Sigma Phi was founded at Yale College (now Yale University) on December 6, 1845. It was originally created as a sophomore class literary society (at the time, many fraternities were founded as literary societies). In 1847, the fraternity's publication, The Tomahawk was first publshed. In 1860, Delta chapter at Marietta College, Marietta, Ohio was founded as an all-class social fraternity. In 1864, Alpha Sigma Phi was suppressed by the Yale faculty, and for a brief time existed under the name Delta Beta Xi until it was finally shut down in 1872, leaving Delta at Marietta the only Alpha Sig chapter.

In 1907, members of the Yale Masonic Club contacted Delta Chapter and re-established Alpha at Yale. Since then over 60 chapters of the fraternity have been established nationwide.
