I think bowling may be one of those things that's so "out", it's "in". Like Hawaiian shirts, or Elvis on black velvet paintings or eyeglasses with thick, black, plastic frames. It's someone's way of saying, "I am so cool that I can do this and STILL be cool!" At least IMO!
