I think what you might be thinking of Tom, is
Eileen Stevens' son that was pledging a local at Alfred and died in a hazing death. This was quite a while ago, but of course every time she did a speech somewhere it was mentioned where he went to school...so of course people unfairly started to associate the whole system with hazing. The ZBT incident (which the History Channel doc brought up) was pretty much the straw that broke the camel's back, from what I could tell.
So y'all are both right.
