A credit record shows, in addition to your current address and possibly your previous address:
-record of all credit accounts (credit cards, loans, in-store credit) in the past few years
-any debts that may be held in your name (or variations of your name)
-any defaulted accounts or bankruptcy records
-inquiries made against your account (ie, credit applications)
Someone else could probably elaborate on these. I used to do credit for a jewelry store, and this is the stuff that I remember most vividly. You also receive a credit score, which is an easy way for a creditor to evaluate your credit worthiness.
I highly suggest you check out a credit report ASAP, especially if you're changing your name, or if you share a name with someone in your family. Mr Munchkin is a Jr, and had a hard time getting credit until he realized that his father's name (and therefore, questionable credit) was getting on his report as well. They fixed it within a business day, and he has had his impeccable credit restored. We have to check it from time to time just to make sure the same thing hasn't happened again.
